The Saleen
Sport Truck S331 made its official debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show
but won’t go into production until this summer. Boasting a 450-horsepower
supercharged engine and race-inspired suspension tuning, the truck will
compete with other top-of-the-line fullsize performance pickups such as
the Dodge SRT-10 and the Roush Stage III F-150.
“The
S331 is the perfect sport truck for individuals who are passionate about
what they drive,” says Steve Saleen, the president and CEO of Saleen,
Inc. “They’re for individuals who require sports-car-like
handling and performance, yet whose lives require the utility of a pickup
truck.”
Based on
the Ford F-150 Super Cab, the Saleen truck will be offered with a base
325-horsepower 5.4-liter engine as well as the twin-screw supercharged
model. Both versions feature Saleen calibration, performance exhaust and
improved intake. The Saleen Racecraft suspension includes linear-rate
coil-over springs, tubular stabilizer bar, N2 struts and urethane bushings
up front. The rear has Saleen leaf springs and N2 shocks. Saleen 7-spoke
23-inch wheels wrapped with BFG 305/40VR-23 tires are found at all four
corners. Braking is enhanced with 15-inch slotted rotors and ABS 6-piston
calipers up front.
Saleen styling
cues are found in the front fascia, hood, side skirts and rear pan, all
injection molded and made from Thermoplastic Olefins (TPO). The numerous
vents are enhanced with diamond-mesh screens. Dual exhaust exit through
the side skirts just before the rear wheels. Although the truck wasn’t
started up for the press, Saleen officials describe the exhaust note as
“thundering.” The truck will be offered in white, two shades
of red, black, green, Dark Stone and Smokestone. Saleen will offer optional
tonneau covers, bedliner and various utility racks to meet the needs of
outdoor enthusiasts.
Leather-skinned
bucket seats highlight the interior along with custom floor mats, driving
pedals, grey-faced gauges, 6-CD sound system and extensive Saleen-themed
trim. Optional is a Rockford Fosgate audio upgrade with 10-inch subwoofer
and a GPS system.
The S331
truck carries a 7000-pound tow rating and a payload capacity of 1500 pounds.
Curb weight is just under 5340 pounds. All trucks carry the standard 3-year,
36,000-mile warranty. Production numbers will be stamped on the bumper
as well as an interior dash plaque. More information on the truck will
follow when the vehicle is made available to the press for testing this
spring.
Saleen is
no stranger to pickup trucks, having won 1991 SCCA Race Truck championship
in a Ford Ranger. He also produced a limited run of 30 Saleen Ranger trucks
for the street inspired by the race vehicles in the early ‘90s.
Saleen is best known for his design and production of high-performance
Mustangs and the unique S7 American supercar. His last entry in the truck
market came in 1998 with the Saleen Explorer XP8. Saleen has always stressed
that he is not a tuner but rather his company is a high-performance specialty
vehicle manufacturer. The Saleen team follows the same procedures as any
automaker in certifying to meet state and federal regulations.
